Syrah

Que Syrah, Syrah

"Remember Gentlemen its not just France we are fighting for its Champagne!" Sir Winston Churchill

2007 Don Julio Stolpman - Syrah
Julio Espinosa has been the cellar master at Arcadian for 19 years. His interest in Syrah and desire to push the envelope lead to this wine. 100% Stolpman Vineyard age for 60 months in barrel and 48 months in bottle have produced a very special wine that decidedly deserved to have his name attached. The wine is inky, dark, and opaque in the glass. The rich nose exhibits dark black cherries and rish cocoa, reminiscent of black forrest cake. On the palate dark black cherries and mint along with meat drippings and earthy savory components make for a mouth filling wine. $150

2000 Garys' Syrah
Dark red color. Very youthful on the nose and in the mouth. Pretty nose of slightly meaty black fruit, with a touch of pepper and funk. In the mouth, focused, linear, with a tart edge to the fruit and wonderful palate presence. The acidity is still pronounced but not sharp. The peppery, smokey, and meaty aspects provide a deep undertone to the bright palate of the wine. Nicely done A- Tom Gutting

2001 Garys' Syrah
Still absolutely stellar, actually seemed more fruit forward than previous bottles. Gorgeous nose and really delicious 94 points Aunt Esther.

WOW! This just keeps on getting better. Delicious dark berries, floral, and earthy aromas on to the layers palate with delicious acidity and pepper notes. A very long finish. 96 points PJ HR $85

For this, the inaugural vintage of Hommage MAX, the blend comprises 37.6% Evans Ranch Estrella clone, 28.8% Stolpman clone 7, 9.6% Westerly clone 877 and 24% Starlane Estrella clone.  These barrels were chosen because they were the best examples from each site and they met the criteria I had set.

2004 Hommage MaX

2005 Hommage MaX
The 2005 Hommage A Max is a barrel selection of the top barrels from each of Joe's vineyard sites. It was aged 36 months in Allier barrels, 40% new. The wine showcases great aromatics of spiced meats, subtle barnyard(hay, straw, etc) and pure fruit. Few California Syrahs deliver this aromatic profile and I love the complexity and depth. Medium to full bodied with solid acidity, firm structure, a deft balanced profile and a super long finish; this deserves 3 to 5 years in the cellar and then should drink well over the following decade or more. 95 points Jed Dunnick THE RHONE REPORT

2006 Hommage MaX
The Wine
The 2006 Hommage MaX shows a touch of meatiness on the nose together with an exotic Indian spice touch and herbiness that very much reminds me of a good Northern Rhone.  On the palate, the acidity is so juicy.  Arcadian is way more complex, complete, and exciting a wine right now. Is there a better wine maker in California than Joe Davis?  Hard to imagine.

2007 Hommage MaX
The Wine
The 2007 Syrah Hommage A Max is dense, rich, and powerful. A wine of unusual delineation and finesse, the 2007 flows across the palate and an exotic melange of black cherry, spices, white flowers, and mint, all woven together beautifully. The 100% new French oak barrels are barely perceptible, such is the wines purity and balance. This unique and highly personal wine from Joe Davis is loaded with personality. 94 points Antonio Galloni $75

2008 Hommage MaX
Brilliant ruby red. Intense, spice-accented aromas of cassis, violet, and smoky  minerals; smells a lot like a ripe northern Rhone wine. Spicy dark berry and floral pastille flavors show impressive focus and depth, with a peppery flourish adding vivacity. The floral-driven impressively long finish features building tannins and a subtle smoky nuance. 92 points Steve Tanzer $85

2007 Purisima - Syrah
The 2007 Purisima is one of the wilder wines in this range of Syrahs. Bright red fruit, anise, fennel, tobacco, and pine all seem to jump from the glass in a wine that is all about delineation and focus. Hints of tobacco, and savory herbs add further nuance on a bright chiseled finish underpinned by a surprising amount of minerality and pure salinity. 93 points Antonio Galloni

2005 Purisima - Syrah
High acidity, purple fruited a bit earthy, hints of leather and ballpoint ink. Tannins are pretty much gone, 14.1% alcohol is barely still young but seemingly starting to relax. Will probably go another 5 to 10 years with a bit more upside. 93 points Brian Graffstrom

2008 Sleepy Hollow - Syrah
Opaque purple. Cherry, dark barries, wood smoke, and leather on the nose, with a suggestion of cured meat coming up with air. Sappy sweet with a wild streak, offering ripe blueberry and mulberry flavors and notes of beef jerky and bitter chocolate. In a decidedly funky style, with good finishing punch, dusty tannin and subtle floral finish. 89 points Steve Tanzer

2008 Stolpman
Brilliant ruby-red. Smoky, deeply pitched, black, and blue fruits on the nose with complicating cracked pepper and olive nuances; smells like a ripe northern Rhone wine. Stains the palate with floral-accented blueberry and bitter cherry flavors lifted by a spice nuance. Finishes smoky, sweet, and very long, with resonating floral and slow building tannins. 92 points Steve Tanzer

2004 Stolpman
The Harvest
Two thousand four will be remembered as the year of the summer swelter.  Early in August temperatures climbed to 43 degrees centigrade and lingered well into early September. Much of the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay were cooked by this unusual high heat.  Syrah, however, thrived.

2005 Stolpman
The Harvest
The Central Coast has been struggling for the last several years with low water tables and very low average annual rainfall.  This puts additional pressure on the plants as they struggle to survive the impact of reduced water access.

The Harvest
2007 was just a lovely delightful vintage, getting back to a more typical harvesting schedule.  Bringing in just less than 6 tons from our two parcels on October 25th.

2008 Purisima - Syrah
Brilliant ruby red. Intense, smoke tinged red berry and floral pastille aromas show very good energy and pungent character. Supple and juicy, offering fresh raspberry and bitter cherry flavors and a hint of licorice. A subtle smoked meat quality adds complexity to a long, gently tannic finish. 91 points Steve Tanzer $45
