Pinot Noir

A Sense of Place Exhibiting the uniqeness of each VineyarD.

"Joe Davis' goal is to create serious, long lived and intense Burgundian styled wines and to that end, he typically uses a high proportion of whole clusters. As a rule Davis works with stems so readers should note that becuase of the presence of stems during vinification, the texture and mouth feel of his wines are decidely different than much of what you will usually taste from California and Oregon. Not surprisingly stylistically the wines do indeed closely resemble the Burgundian model and it would require a careful taster to idnetify many of the Arcadian wines as US Pinots."

2011 Clos Pepe  - Pinot Noir

The 2011 Clos Pepe is Terrific!  Brite red purplish fruit, sweet spices, mint, licorice, and lavender are front and center. Delineated and vibrant, but with striking mid-palate pliancy and purity of fruit. Another winner from Arcadian. This is especially restrained, understated Sta. Rita Hills Pinot. Antonio Galloni 93 points  $65

2012 Clos Pepe - Pinot Noir
The Harvest
The harvest of 2012 was by all accounts a fantastic vintage. Spring saw a good set due to know frost, no wind and mild days. Summer was cool until August and then everything sprung into gear with a larger than normal crop size all over the state. All in all it will go down as a vintage of high quality and high quantity.

2009 SIERRA MADRE - Pinot Noir
The 2009 Sierra Madre is silky, gracious, and perfumed in the glass. Rose petals, sweet red cherries, and cinnamon are lasced together beautifully in the glass. Sweet floral and spice notes add lift on the perfumed finish. The Sierra Madre spent 34 months in oak, unheard of for Pinot Noir, and one of the main reasons the has such silky, racy, texture, which is unlike anything else readers will encounter in California Pinot Noir. Antonio Galloni 92 points $50

2009 La Encantada - Pinot Noir
The 2009 La Encantada is laced with game, smoke, tobacco, dried flowers and a host of other aromas and flavors that are typical of cool-climate sites such as this one. Soft and lilting on the palate, the 2009 is an excellent choice for drinking over the next few years. Dried rose petal , sweet red cherry and licorice add the closing shades of nuance. The high amount of whole clusters contributes to the wine's  super distinctive, floral/savory profile.  Antonio Galloni 91 points $52

2009 Francesca - Pinot Noir
Another staller wine under this moniker. The 2009 Francesca is a selection of the best barrels from Sierra Madre Vineyard. With less than 100 cases produced this is sold primarily in the Tasting room and to our wine club members. Limit is 2 bottles per person. 93 points  $75

2008 Pisoni - Pinot Noir
Ruby red. An exotic perfume evokes candied dark fruits, Asian spices, potpourri and cola. Pliant, sweet and focused, offering intense blackberry, bitter cherry, and rose pestille flavors along with exotic notes of star anise and blood orange. Finishes supple and long with resonating flora nuences, gentle tannis and excellent focus. 92 points Stephen Tanzer $75 Arcadian's 2008 Pinot Noir Pisoni is one of the most delicate, fragrant wines I have ever tasted from this very well known site in the Santa Lucia Highlands. Sweet red cherries licorice, tobacco, and mint are woven together in a fabric of notable class. Expressive floral and candied notes add texture on the finish. Antonio Galloni 91 points  $75

2000 FRANCESCA - Pinot Noir

The birth year of our daughter and the impetus for this wine remains one of the all time great Arcadian wines produced. again limited to 2 bottles per person $100

2001 Francesca - Pinot Noir
The Wine
For this, the second vintage of Francesca, I selected two barrels from the Pisoni Vineyard, one barrel from the Garys' Vineyard and one barrel from the Fiddlestix Vineyard.  These barrels were chosen because they were the best examples from each site and they met the criteria I had set.

2002 Francesca - Pinot Noir
The Wine
For this, the third vintage of Francesca, I selected one barrel from the Pisoni Vineyard, one barrel from the Dierberg Vineyard and one barrel from the Fiddlestix Vineyard.  These barrels were chosen because they were the best examples from each site and they met the criteria I had set.

2003 Francesca - Pinot Noir
The Wine
This being the fourth vintage of Francesca, I selected the following to complete the composition; one barrel from the Pisoni Vineyard and one barrel of clone 4 Pommard from the Fiddlestix Vineyard, 30 gallons of Dierberg Vineyard clone 5 Pommard and 30 gallons of Dierberg Vineyard clone 13.

2005 Francesca - Pinot Noir
The Wine
For this, the fifth vintage of Francesca, I selected one barrel from the Pisoni Vineyard, one barrel of Sleepy Hollow split canopy, one barrel of Clos Pepe, 22 gallons of clone 115 and 11 gallons of clone 31 from Dierberg along with 11 gallons of clone 115 and 11 gallons of clone 777 from Fiddlestix.

2006 Francesca - Pinot Noir
Popped and poured. Great notes of red fruits and herbs. Tastes of strawberry, blueberry, cherry, herb de Provence. Good round tannins and great acid levels.Long smooth finish of blackberry, cherry, and leather. Blue shorts likes this wine 94 points $92

2007 Francesca - Pinot Noir
Francesca is a selection of Joe Davis' favorite four barrels in the cellar. I especially like the way the wine fleshes out on the mid palate as it shows off its pliancy and generous personality. The Francesca is all about sexiness and fantastic balance. It is soft, pretty, seductive, wine to enjoy over the next decade. The vineyard sources are Pisoni, Fiddlestix and Solomon Hills. I am not sure the Francesca is meaningfully better than the best vineyard designates , but it does have its own personality. 93 points Antonio Galloni $85

2008 Francesca - Pinot Noir

(Made from a barrel each of Pisoni,Fiddlestix and Sleepy Hollow wine) Deep red. An exotically perfumed nose displays scents of raspberry, cherry -cola pungent herbs, potpourri and smoky minerals. Fleshy and sweet but also sharply focused, with a suave floral accent ti its red berry componant and spice cake flavors. Inpressively lush and broad but lively, finishing with silky tannins and excellent floral-driven persistance. 93 points $85

2006 Jills Cuvee - Pinot Noir
The Wine
Bright and pungent, high pitched aromas of red berries, flowers, and spices. Following that, you'll taste a high-pitched and intense flavor in the mouth, with a penetrating quality to the sweet raspberry, cherry, and floral pastille flavors.  This seductive, vibrant wine finishes quite long, with lingering spiciness and an echo of sweet red berries.

2007 Jills Cuvee - Pinot Noir
Made from a plot in Solomon Hills, the 2007 Pinot Noir Jill's Cuvee is simply gorgeous! Sweet red cherries, flowers, mint, and anise flesh out nicely in the glass. Layers of inner sweetness and perfume add notable complexity to this refind, finessed wine. The opulance of the vintage comes through, yet there is an elagance and overall sense of harmony in the Jill's Cuvee that is compelling. 93 points $75

2000 Pisoni - Pinot Noir
The Harvest
The 2000 vintage was the largest harvest we've seen at Pisoni since we began working with this vineyard.  Several passes were made in the spring and early summer to reduce the yields.  Normally we only do one vendange et vert but cluster counts and weights told us we needed to do several.

2001 Pisoni - Pinot Noir
Ruby red color. Ful blown nose of violets and more violets joined by raspberrry, anice, iodine, and rock. Layers of stony red fruit on the palate with an integrated burst of that wild,  sauvage beef blood Pisoni thing streaking through and resolving to sweet grip with each sip. Nicely acidic and demonstrating firm but fine grained tannin. Long finish of red berry, iron, briar, and stone, lovely showing for this wine. 92 points Doug Lee

2003 Pisoni - Pinot Noir
The Harvest
The harvest of 2003 was characterized by two significant conditions at Pisoni Vineyard.  The first had to do with weather and the second water.  Initially, the weather was defined by a cool, wet spring which resulted in a small high quality crop with intense flavors and uniform richness.

2005 Pisoni - Pinot Noir
The Harvest
The harvest of 2005 was characterized by two significant conditions at Pisoni Vineyard; rain and yields.  Timely and extensive rains produced significant crop loads despite setting our buds at one-to two-per spur.  Cluster weights and cluster counts were way up with additional energy.

2006 Pisoni - Pinot Noir
Color is translucent gernet with noticeable fading at the edge by this point; beautiful in the glass. Nose of fresh ripe red fruits, 5 spice, forrest floor, and barnyard/game meats. Palate is med. bodied with tart red fruit and spice confirmed and smooth soft tannin, but then alcohol is a little warm on the finish which throws this a little out of balance for me. Everything about this wine screams Burgundian Pinot except the 13.8% Abv. which is not as well hidden in this wine as in many of Joe's other higher Abv wines. Still entirely enjoyable. 90 points $80

2007 Sleepy Hollow - Pinot Noir
The Harvest
The 2007 growing season was impacted by the noticeably cooler winter particularly at bloom and set and about 75% of the annual rainfall.  These two factors contributed to the noticeably smaller berries despite cluster counts being considered normal.  As a result, we experienced a greater skin to juice ratio.
